Hello. I’m James and I offer person-centred therapy online (using Zoom) and in Marsh Barton, Exeter.
People come to therapy for many reasons. You might be experiencing severe feelings of depression, anxiety, suicidality, or desire to self-harm and be looking for support to come through these experiences into a happier, fuller life.
Or perhaps you are feeling lost, alone, uncertain, or are just interested to see what therapy could offer you.
I am passionate about good quality therapy, and believe it can help everyone live a fuller, happier, more authentic life. Whatever your reason for being on this page, welcome, and may you find what you are hoping for.
I practice person-centred therapy. I prioritise being a genuine, caring and empathetic companion to my clients, accepting them and their experience in full, especially in their most difficult moments. You can read more about my approach here but, in short, compassion in the present moment is its foundation.
Background and qualifications
Having previously worked as a teacher in inner London schools I came to train in person-centred therapy when my own experience of receiving person-centred therapy led me to some revolutionary changes in my ways of understanding myself and my world. I am passionate about the approach and sharing it with others. I have an interest in working with men, as men typically are less likely to access therapy than people of other genders, as well as in the cutting-edge field of psychedelic assisted psychotherapy. However, I also enjoy working with all people and experiences.
After completing several initial counselling courses I have undertaken three years of intense training at the Metanoia Institute, London, studying under some of the leading names in the field. I hold a Diploma in Person-centred Psychotherapeutic Counselling and have individual membership of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I am committed to ethical and anti-discriminatory practice and adhere to BACP’s ethical codes.
I also hold academic qualifications in psychology and philosophy, both of which inform my work.
Arrangements and costs
I offer 60 minute sessions and charge £60 per hour. (I have a couple of concessionary spots available if you are able to be flexible on timings).
